about

He thought he saw a Coach-and-Four
That stood beside his bed:
He looked again, and found it was
A Bear Without A Head.
'Poor thing,' he said, 'poor silly thing!
It's waiting to be fed!'

Utterly confusing and disturbingly cacophonic in their usual manner, Bren't Lewiis Ensemble go vocal to the bone in their new "Noncanonical Gospels from the Cult of the Immortal Tapir" album. Absurd jokes spoken loudly and non-hindering laughs and coughs echoing in a beautiful meadow of blooming flowers and mushrooms, violently collapsing in a torrential and endless vomit shower. The sweet good mood is not lost for one minute. Marcel Duchamp and Thomas Pynchon are watching the scenery from a distance. Things are getting weird and blurred. Minutes by minute, the images and sounds turn more and more into peculiar and abstract audio poems. With a little help from some old Elvis' recordings, the Bar of Mottled Soap and the Holy Cult of the Immortal Tapir, we follow the road to Shambala. Or somewhere like that.

Bren't Lewiis Ensemble is the powerhouse of the Butte County Free Music Society, a uniquely far-out experimental label. The Ensemble consists of Gnarlos (aka Seymour Glass from Bananafish, Glands of External Secretion, Tedium House), Lucian Tielens (Idler Arms, Serious Problmz), The City Councilman, Tom Chimpson, and fellow mutants stationed in Berlin, Hiroshima, and various pockets of the US. Their live recordings from the early 80's, such as "At The North Pole, Easter Day, 1982" LP and the legendary recording at Bell Memorial Union in 1984 released as "Out Patience" cdr, perfectly function as proper discography, and that could be so even if the band did not go through the overactive and creative phase that is going through, offering even more weird studio material like the very recent "The Inevitable Typo On Sheila Ostrich's Tombstone" and "Taxidermy Frogs Copulating" albums at BUFMS. "Noncanonical Gospels from the Cult of the Immortal Tapir" is the second BUFMS-related release of Coherent States, after last year's "Convicted Felon Adjusted For Inflation" (CS-18) by Glands of External Secretion, and a second step in our dedicated plan to pay tribute to the amazing music and art that this collective has given us in its 35 years of existence.
